Hiring a marketing agency versus hiring an employee

We have found there are three types of small business owners.

  1. The business owner who wants to do marketing for themselves.  They feel no one else knows their product or service more than they do and therefore, they are the only ones who can successfully do the marketing for their business.  They also feel that paying for marketing or an agency is too expensive and have grabbed the belief that ‘word of mouth’ is going to save them. Some are successful, mostly as they belong to the 3% group.  Most of these businesses fail and go out of business.  We have watched this happen year after year.

2. The business owner who hires an inexperienced person (including spouses) to do their marketing believing that they can learn marketing and move their business forward. It takes years to learn effective marketing practices and with digital technology today, colleges haven’t caught up with the technology yet. If you want to hire this person for 4 to 6 years before they will truly bring you some success, figure out what that cost is.  $30k per year, $50k?  Allow us to tell you what happens next.  Once you have spent over 100k educating that ’employee’ with your hard earned dollars, they are going to leave you to start their own business, their own agency.  Those endings usually don’t end well.  Spouses usually drift off and away from the marketing as they learn how big of a responsibility it is and are overwhelmed quickly with life and family.

3. The business owner who hires an agency. We showcase how to hire an agency in our article HERE.  Those business owners that hire an effective and experienced agency, will have a clear path for growth and see the results of their marketing efforts.  Your marketing spend is much less than hiring someone who is inexperienced.  That marketing agency can coach you on the aspects of marketing which enables you to make even more sound decisions for your business.  You can spend $3000 per month on an employee then have to spend another $3000 for software and advertising for a total of $6000 per month or you can spend $3000 with an agency.  Plus, with an agency you are not having to worry about payroll, taxes, or health insurance issues.  Not to mention unemployment costs. Your call.

Agency vs Employee -

Hiring a marketing agency versus hiring an employee is a decision that many business owners face when looking to improve their marketing efforts. While both options have their benefits, there are several reasons why hiring a marketing agency may be the better choice for your business.

  1. Expertise and experience: A marketing agency is typically made up of a team of experts with a range of skills and experience in different areas of marketing. This means that they can provide a broader range of services and strategies than an individual employee with limited experience. Additionally, a marketing agency has likely worked with many clients in different industries, which gives them a wider perspective and understanding of best practices.

  2. Cost-effective: Hiring a marketing agency can be more cost-effective than hiring an employee because you are only paying for the services you need when you need them. You do not have to pay a salary, benefits, and other overhead costs associated with hiring an employee. Additionally, a marketing agency can work with you to develop a customized marketing strategy that fits within your budget.

  3. Flexibility and scalability: A marketing agency can provide you with the flexibility and scalability to adjust your marketing efforts as needed. If you need to ramp up your marketing efforts quickly or scale back during slower periods, a marketing agency can accommodate your needs. Additionally, a marketing agency can provide you with the resources you need to execute a successful marketing campaign, such as access to advanced technology and marketing tools.

  4. Results-driven: A marketing agency is focused on delivering results for your business. They have a vested interest in ensuring that your marketing efforts are successful because their reputation is on the line. Additionally, a marketing agency can provide you with regular reports and analytics that show the effectiveness of your marketing campaign, which can help you make data-driven decisions about your marketing strategy.

  5. Time-saving: Managing a marketing campaign can be time-consuming and distracting for business owners who have other responsibilities to manage. By hiring a marketing agency, you can free up your time to focus on other aspects of your business while the agency handles your marketing needs.

Overall, while hiring an employee may be beneficial in less situations, hiring a marketing agency can provide you with a broader range of expertise, cost-effective solutions, scalability, and a results-driven approach that can help take your marketing efforts to the next level.
